Voters granted all four Comal County Emergency Services Districts the ability to levy sales
taxes or raise property taxes in Saturday's elections.
Representatives from ESD Nos. 1, 4 and 5 were looking to levy sales taxes in the Bulverde and
Spring Branch areas, which they say are rapidly growing.
In ESD No. 1, which provides EMS funding for Bulverde and Spring Branch, polls showed 454
people were for the 3/8 cent tax hike and 177 against.
Both ESD Nos. 4 and 5 were voted to allow a 5/8 cent tax increase. The vote was 319 for and
135 against in ESD No. 4 and 128 to 48 in favor in ESD No. 5.
Citizens in ESD No. 2, which provides EMS service to the Canyon Lake area, voted to raise the
property tax ceiling, with 368 voters in favor of giving the ESD No. 2 board the ability to raise
the property tax cap from 2 to 10 cents per $100, while 310 voted against the measure.
ESD No. 2 secretary George Steinke said although district officials have the option, they will not
exceed 4 1/2 cents for the next two years and will only increase if necessary afterwards.
Waiting at the courthouse with anticipation for election results Saturday night was ESD No. 3
Chief Shawn Wherry. He said he was happy to see the results.
'It was close in some areas, but we pulled through' Wherry said 'We thank the voters. We
know in times like this it is difficult to come out and vote that you want to increase your taxes,
but we want to thank them for considering the importance of our services.'
